Reading & Spelling

Drawing(9)Traditional methods in teaching learners how to read are based on either Whole language or Phonics methods. These methods are based on the assumption that learners will eventually pick up the words and their sounds by either being exposed to texts (whole language) or being taught isolated letter names and their corresponding letter names (phonics). The memory demands are large with these methods therefore resulting in numerous learners struggling to read or not being able to spell at all.

CogniStance offers a successful Phono-Graphix programme called ‘Read For Africa’ that teaches learners the different sounds in the English language, getting learners to spell and read faster.

Read For Africa helps channel the information learners have received through traditional methods in a different way, helping them make more sense of it and fully understand what they have been taught.
It complements traditional teaching methods plus learning is fun and exciting.

Read For Africa is able to teach most learners how to read within the first 3-6 months of being exposed to literacy instruction.

At CogniStance a learner is first assessed to determine their reading and spelling ability. Lessons are then attended over a 3 to 6 month period, lasting between 30 - 60 minutes each. The learner is then reassessed to examine progress and determine further action.
